The ”Geroskipou loukoumi” delight, a mouth-watering dessert made of sugar, corn-flour and almonds, has been included in the European Union’s catalogue for products of protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication, defined in EU law to protect the names of regional products.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment of Cyprus has announced that “based on the EC regulation 1485/2007 published in the official European Communities journal L330, dated 15.12.2007, the Geroskipou loukoumi has been included in the European register for protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication as a protected geographical indication.”
The application for inclusion in the EU catalogue was submitted end of 2003 by Aphrodite Yeroskipos Delights Ltd, a company in Geroskipou, a small town on the western coast.
In March 2005, the application was sent to the competent European Committee for a final decision. No objections were raised from other EU member states or third countries and this opened the way for the official registration of the “Geroskipou loukoumi”.
