Armenia’s “Hidden Track” is destination of the year

Travel writers in Cyprus have chosen Armenia as their first ‘Destination of the Year’, presenting the country’s ambassador in Nicosia with the award, highlighting Armenia’s growing appeal as a unique and diverse travel destination.

Phivos Nicolaides, president of the Cyprus Travel Writers and Journalists Society, noted that Armenia stood out for its blend of ancient history and modern development, as well as its reputation for hospitality and cultural depth.

“Beyond our borders, we, proudly name Armenia as our International Destination of the Year for 2026,” Nicolaides said at a celebratory event hosted in collaboration with the Embassy of Armenia, the Pharos Arts Foundation and Maze Trade, offering traditional dishes and Armenian cuisine, as well as a selection of Armenian wines and spirits.

“A land of ancient history, rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, Armenia offers a unique journey through time and tradition, with a spirit of welcoming hospitality, that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.”

“As the first nation to adopt Christianity, it boasts unique UNESCO-listed monasteries. Armenia, can truly impress any traveler, seeking new experiences — whether through its monuments, its traditions, or its exceptional food, drinks, and so much more. Let us celebrate, Armenia — our Destination of the Year 2026 — and look forward, to a year of exploration, appreciation and meaningful travel.”

A commemorative diploma was also presented to Ambassador Inna Torgomyan by the vice-president of the travel writers’ society George Michaelides.

In her remarks, Ambassador Torgomyan highlighted the significance of the award and expressed appreciation for the recognition, noting that it provides an important opportunity to further promote Armenia’s visibility as an attractive and competitive tourism destination, as promoted through the #TheHiddenTrack campaign.

Armenia’s rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and tourism potential were presented through visual materials and publications, offering guests a comprehensive overview of the country’s diverse travel experiences.

The embassy reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening tourism ties between Armenia and Cyprus and expressed appreciation for the travel writers’ society’s recognition.

Artur Babayan, CEO of the Visa Concord travel group in Yerevan, said connectivity between Cyprus and Armenia is at its peak, with Europe-wide carrier WizzAir operating daily flights, and added schedules on weekends, while Gyumri is a new route operated on Thursdays and Sundays.

The event concluded with a cultural segment, during which popular Armenian Cypriot singer Hovig performed two beautiful Armenian songs.
