Police identify Romanian burned in car accident

Police are looking into the circumstances under which a 61-year-old man lost his life after his vehicle overturned and burst into flames outside Nicosia.

The incident claimed the life of a 61-year-old Romanian permanent resident on the island, identified as Ion Bordei, following a DNA test.

The unfortunate man was burned alive in the fire which broke out when his vehicle overturned on Saturday.

Investigators found clues on the man’s identity in the vehicle, later confirmed by a DNA test with the help of a relative flown in from Romania.

The tests were carried out at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday around 4 pm while the 61-year-old was driving his car on Glafcos Clerides Avenue in Yeri, Nicosia, heading towards the village.

At a point on the road, under the circumstances still, under investigation, he lost control of his vehicle, which overturned and came to rest on the roadside.

A fire broke out in the vehicle, which claimed the life of the 61-year-old man.

Police have appealed to the public for information, with ongoing investigations carried out by the Nicosia Traffic Department.
