CYPRUS: Registered unemployed decrease by 16.7% in August

The number of registered unemployed in Cyprus during August decreased 16.7% on an annual basis to under 20,000, official figures showed on Wednesday.


Unemployed persons registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of August reached 19,883, it was 23,866 a year ago.

Based on seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for August 2019 decreased to 21,945 persons from 25,952 in August last year and 22,236 in the July 2019.

There was a decrease of 3,983 persons or 16.7% compared with August 2018.

This was attributed mainly to the sectors of trade (a decrease of 684), construction (-571), public administration (-391), accommodation and food service activities (-311), manufacturing (-260), professional, scientific and technical activities (-122) while newcomers in the labour market decreased by 1,308.
