The Cyprus National Council of political party leaders is meeting to discuss a proposal submitted by Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci for the joint management of natural resources amid Turkey’s illegal activities.

President Nicos Anastasiades will brief the leaders during the session in Limassol on Tuesday.

Government source has told CNA that Nicosia will issue its official position concerning Akinci’s proposal following the meeting.

The same source highlighted that political party leaders needed to be briefed on the Turkish Cypriot proposal, which was submitted to the UN Secretary General.

Akinci seeks the creation of a joint committee to manage untapped gas reserves and future revenues are equally shared.

Nicosia says energy discussions with Turkish Cypriots should be part of reunification talks, adding that energy wealth belongs to all Cypriots. The government says future gas proceeds will be shared equitably after a Cyprus settlement is agreed.
