EUROPE: Cyprus detains Turkish-Kurd terror suspect wanted in Germany

Cyprus said on Sunday it has detained a Turkish national of Kurdish origin wanted in Germany for “terrorist activity”.


A statement issued by the Cyprus presidency said the person was arrested and remained in police custody after appearing before a local court on March 22.

It said the procedure was based on a “European Arrest Warrant and deportation order submitted to the Cypriot authorities, it said the unnamed individual was facing “criminal prosecution for terrorist action pending before a German court”.

Cyprus said the person in custody was of Kurdish origin and a Turkish national but was recognised by Cypriot authorities as a political refugee and holds Cypriot travel documents.

“According to the law, the whole issue will be handled by the Cypriot courts, which a must rule whether to execute the European warrant within 60 days of the arrest,” said the official statement.
