A mere 0.17% of Cyprus GDP was spent on environmental protection activities in industry in 2012, less than half that in other EU countries where expenditure reached 0.39%, the statistical service Cystat reported.
“The total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2012 is estimated at €29.6 mln, which corresponds to 0.17% of the gross domestic product, compared to €32.2 mln or 0.18% in 2011. The corresponding expenditures in the member-states of the European Union are estimated at 0.39% of GDP,” Cystat said.
By sector of economic activity, the manufacturing sector reported expenditures of €24.6 mln, the mining and quarrying industries €2.2 mln and the electricity and water supply enterprises €2.8 mln, the statistical authority said.
It added that in the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of food products accounted for €7.9 mln, manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products for €7.6 mln, manufacturing of beverages for €3.0 mln, manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and preparations for €1.3 mln and manufacturing of wood and of wood products for €1.2 mln.
By environmental domain, expenditure related to the reduction of air emissions reached €10.2 mln, the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste €9.3 mln, the treatment of waste water €8.9 mln and others (such as the abatement of noise and vibrations, the protection of soil and ground water and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity) €1.2 mln, CyStat reported.
