President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades suffers a knee problem and will have to undergo a surgery in August, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has told CNA.

President Anastasiades was expected to attend yesterday morning a memorial service for the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, who died on August 3, 1977. However, he was represented at the service by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

“The President suffers a meniscus problem in his left knee and he has been advised by his doctor to avoid walking and standing” Christodoulides said, replying to a question by CNA.

He added that the President “must undergo a surgery as soon as possible, and certainly in August”.
