Anastasiades and Eroglu to hold new meeting on Monday

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, will be holding a new meeting on Monday in the context of UN-led talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem.
During their meeting, they are expected to evaluate the course of negotiations so far, examine any problems arising in the process, and discuss confidence-building measures and the operation of the technical committees that have been set up for various aspects of the Cyprus issue.

Monday`s meeting was agreed on by the negotiators of the two sides, Andreas Mavroyiannis and Kudret Ozersay, during a meeting they held on May 20. At their next meeting on May 30, the negotiators discussed the agenda of Monday`s meeting, without finalising it, and the matter was expected to be discussed on the same day with UN representatives.
The leaders of the two communities had last met on May 21 at a restaurant in the UN-controlled buffer zone, at a dinner with US Vice President Joe Biden. In statements after the dinner, Biden had said that the leaders of the two communities had agreed to expedite the process and meet at least twice a month. They had also reaffirmed their commitment to their joint statement of February 11, according to Biden.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Anastasiades and Eroglu are currently engaged in talks with an aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.
