Nicosia Municipality is trying to emulate the City of London’s campaign to cut down on gas guzzling cars roaming around town and rewarding zero-emission vehicles by offering free parking, but only in select spaces.

The town hall announced that owners of hybrid engine cars or electric vehicles (EV) who live or work within municipal boundaries may apply for free-parking permits, valid until January 15, 2015.
However, the permits, to be displayed on the car’s windshield are not valid in street-side spaces regulated by park meters nor in the Solons Street parking lot (near Ayios Savvas church) which only has 24 spaces.
The municipality operates a total of 13 parking lots with pay-and-display systems for nearly 1,500 cars http://www.nicosia.org.cy/el-GR/discover/parking/ , where the current sticker system, supplemented by mobile SMS payments will be overhauled and replaced by gated controls.
Last month, the municipality announced a monthly rate of 30 and 40 euros for residents who live and work within the walled city centre.
