The Ministry of Communications and Works is in contact with Eurocontrol for establishing an independent authority that will be responsible for air navigation or Cyprus airspace control, a practice followed in almost all 29 Eurocontrol member states.

Minister of Communications Tasos Mitsopoulos briefed the parliamentary Committee on Communications regarding the operation, staffing and flight safety of the Civil Aviation Department.
With the establishment of the new company, the Civil Aviation Department will handle issues concerning only licensing, certification, training and supervision.

It is expected that the operation of the new company would solve certain problems, such as the delays in Cyprus` airspace, a problem Turkey is trying to use to its advantage and attribute a role to the illegal control centre in Turkish-occupied Tymbou.
