Cypriot parties begin preparations ahead of EP elections

Cyprus political parties have begun preparations ahead of May’s European Parliament elections, with the ruling Democratic Rally party and the Socialist party announcing cooperation with other parties.

The Political Bureau of the ruling right – wing party DISY (Democratic Party) decided today that one of its candidates for the European Parliament elections will be the President of the European Party (EUROKO) Demetris Syllouris.

DISY will decide on the other candidates by the end of next month.

On Tuesday, the leaders of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK and Cyprus’ Green Party (Movement of Ecologists and Environmentalists) held a meeting in the light of their cooperation at the European Parliament elections.

President of EDEK Yiannakis Omirou and General Secretary of Cyprus’ Greens George Perdikes agreed on the final text of their political declaration which outlines the convergences of the two movements in various areas, such as the Cyprus problem, economy, social issues, protection of the environment and the EU.

This year’s EP elections will be the third in which Cyprus is participating since its full accession to the EU, in May 2004.
