A group of 12 ceramists from Cyprus are currently participating in a joint celebration of contemporary ceramic works together with Maltese ceramists in Malta. Altogether they are showcasing some 60 contemporary ceramic works at the Auberge d’Italie in central Valletta. Supported by Emirates airline, this collaboration has grown ever since the first exhibition in 2005, with the venue alternating between Larnaka and Malta.
The Cypriot ceramists, who are members of the Cyprus Ceramists and Potters Association, are headed in Malta by Vassos Demetriou and Efthymios Symeou, while artists Mario and Charles Sammut are heading the group of 12 Maltese ceramists.
As in previous years, the ninth edition of this project is an inspirational showcase of contemporary ceramic works from both Mediterranean islands, wherein some of the best ceramists from both islands are taking part.
“Alternating the venue every year between Larnaka and Malta, the exhibition stirs away from traditional craft to present an art form defined as contemporary ceramics. Starting as a small exhibition organised by a small group of ceramists, the idea of this exhibition was both an immediate success and well received by practicing ceramists and art enthusiasts from the two countries,” said Efthymios Symeou.
“Cypriot and Maltese ceramists, who travel to each other’s country for the respective exhibitions, have formed a working relationship through cultural interactions and encounters. The principal aim is the exchange of ideas, information and other cultural elements that help foster better mutual understanding between ceramists of the two countries,” said Efthymios Symeou.
The previous editions were held at Palazzo Vilhena, Mdina, (2005); Galleria Kypriani Gonia, Larnaka, (2005); Auberge d’Italie, Valletta (2007), Municipal Gallery, Larnaka (2008) and St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta (2009), Municipal Gallery Larnaka (2010), Bagheria in Palermo (2011), and Municipal Gallery, Larnaka (2012).
The exhibition in Malta will remain open until 6th November 2013.
Emirates is currently operating four weekly flights between Malta and Larnaka, using a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, and onwards to Dubai.
