The Cyprus problem and the situation of the Cyprus economy were discussed during a tete-a-tete meeting on Thursday here between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on the sidelines of the European People’s Party Summit, which they both attended.

According to information, Merkel congratulated Anastasiades on the successful first evaluation of the Cypriot economy by the Troika, noting that Nicosia fully met its commitments.

The Chancellor underlined that her country is willing to provide assistance to Cyprus if needed.

With regard to the Cyprus problem, Merkel said that she fully agrees on upgrading the EU role in the peace process aiming to solve the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated UN-led efforts over the past decades have not led to a negotiated settlement in Cyprus. Talks are expected to resume in the coming weeks.
