Even as it addresses the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake, Haiti now faces a devastating cholera epidemic that, in a short period of time, has killed thousands in every region of the country. Before the earthquake, most Haitians already had limited access to safe water and sanitation facilities. The key to containing the highly virulent disease lies with improving the sanitary conditions in the country and spreading information on how to prevent infection. With the objective of raising awareness, UNICEF is using community mobilization approaches to reach out to Haitians with prevention messages through various community-wide information sharing activities.
