Andros Kyprianou reelected leader of AKEL

The 105-member strong Central Committee of ruling left-wing AKEL party reelected Andros Kyprianou as the Secretary General of the party.

While announcing the election result at the 21st pancyprian conference of AKEL, it was said no other candidacies were submitted. In favor of Kyprianou voted 98 members of the newly-elected Central Committee, while 3 voted against and 4 abstained.

Kyprianou, while taking the floor, said it is imperative to support the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, in his effort to find a negotiated solution to the Cyprus problem.

He added, that only a final solution to the problem will ensure stability and peace in Cyprus, giving a chance to the people to prosper.

In his address speech, Kyprianou said that he will remain one of the people, saying that the role of the Secretary General is to be the first among equals.

Moreover, he extended an invitation to all political forces, to work together towards the solution of the Cyprus problem and in favor of national unity. This unity needs to be based on principles, he said, adding that it has to take into consideration the commitments of the Greek Cypriot side towards the international community and the Turkish Cypriot Community, as well as the decisions taken at the National Council.

The Secretary General of AKEL also said that the party needs to work for the implementation of the political programme of the Government and noted that the current administration has done more in the past two and a half years, than previous governments.

Cyprus has been dived since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
