Barclays is expected to appoint Bob Diamond as its new chief executive in a shake-up at the British lender, media reports said on Tuesday.
Diamond, who heads the group's investment banking arm Barclays Capital, will take over from John Varley at its annual meeting next March, the Financial Times said on its website.
The 59-year-old investment banker, who will relocate to London from New York, is to become deputy chief executive of Barclays on October 1, and take up his new post in April next year, Sky News business editor Mark Kleinman wrote on his blog.
Barclays was not immediately reachable for comment.
Citing company insiders, the Financial Times said there would be no change to the bank's strategy under its new leadership.
Varley has told colleagues he wants to concentrate on charitable work but has been mooted by some for a role in government, according to the FT.
He had not previously indicated he was planning to retire, the Wall Street Journal said in a report.
Varley, who was appointed chief executive in 2004, is expected to remain as an adviser to Barclays for six months, Britain's Times newspaper reported.
