Star Alliance partners Continental Airlinesand Greek carrier Aegean said on Monday they started codesharing on flights between New York and Athens.
Pending government approval, Aegean will also codeshare on Continental flights from New York to Paris and Rome, offering the alliance network improved access to Greek vacation hotspots.
Established in 1997, the Star Alliance network offers travellers worldwide reach, with more than 21,000 daily flights to 1,172 airports in 181 destinations. Other members include Air Canada, Air China, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines.
Codesharing is the practice of two or more airlines selling tickets for seats on a plane operated by one or other of them.
"Aegean Airlines continues to expand its codeshare strategy across the world. Thanks to this new partnership with Continental we can now offer Greek passengers a great travel solution to New York," Aegean's chief executive Dimitris Gerogiannis said in a statement.
Members of frequent-flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem mileage anywhere on either airline's global route network, the carriers said.
Aegean, which has agreed to merge with privatised local rival Olympic Airlines pending EU approval, became the 28th member of Star Alliance in June this year, completing the integration process after its acceptance as a future member in May 2009.
