Number of building permits in Cyprus increases

The number of building permits issued in Cyprus recorded an increase of 6.9% during the first four months of 2010.

According to Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), during the period January–April 2010, a total of 3.066 building permits were issued in Cyprus, registering an increase of 6.9% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The total value of these permits increased by 10.2% and the total area recorded an increase of 8.0%. The number of dwelling units recorded an increase of 1.9%.

The Statistical Service announced that the number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices during April 2010 stood at 668. The total value of these permits reached 211.3 million Euro and the total area 244.4 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 1.176 dwelling units.

According to the Statistical Service, building permits constitute a leading indicator of future activity in the construction sector.
