Drop in 2009 road transport reflects weaker economic activity

There was a large fall in national road transport in 2009, according to the Statistical Service, which presumably reflects weaker economic activity in 2009.
In January – December national road transport fell by 31.5% in 2009.
In terms of tonnage, the main carriage was “Metal ores and other mining and quarrying products”, at 9.5 mln tonnes, followed by “Other non-metallic mineral products”, at 5.0 mln tonnes, and “food, products, beverages and tobacco”, at 4.4 mln tonnes.
International road transport increased by 69% in 2009. The main products carried here were products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, at 14.5 mln tonnes, and food, products, beverages and tobacco, at 14.0 mln tonnes.
