A joint event was organized on Thursday by Greek and Turkish Cypriot Municipal workers held in both sides of Ledra street to proclaim their desire for a mutually acceptable solution on the Cyprus problem which will reunite the island.

The workers were members of the Greek Cypriot trade union of SIDIKEK PEO and the Turkish Cypriot trade Union of BES and Devrimci Genel.

According to their joint declaration, the three unions express their support to the efforts undertaken by the two leaders to reach a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus, with a single personality, a single nationality and a single sovereignty, based on the political equality of the two communities.

The unions also note that with their long cooperation and joint events they organize, they will contribute to the acceptance and smooth implementation of the solution, which is a desire shared both by Greek and Turkish Cypriots workers.

“The three unions are doing their utmost to create conditions of mutual understanding, friendship and solidarity between workers of both sides, who wish to strive together for prosperity and progress in a unified and peaceful Cyprus”.

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
