Motor vehicle registrations in Cyprus decrease in 2009

Total registrations of motor vehicles during 2009 decreased by 25.7% to 50,291, of which 23,333 new and 26,958 used, from 67,722 vehicles in 2008, according to a report issued today by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

According to the Statistical Service, the registration of private saloon cars decreased to 36,252 from 49,100 in 2008 recording a decrease of 26.2%. Of the total number of private saloon cars, 14,981 vehicles or 41.3% were new and 21,271 vehicles or 58.7% were used vehicles.

The registration of goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 19.4% to 6,998 in 2009, compared to 8,680 in 2008.

Light goods vehicles decreased by 16.0% to 5,584, from 6,645 in 2008, whereas heavy goods vehicles decreased by 30.5% to 1,414 in 2009, from 2,035 in 2008.

Mechanised cycles decreased by 22.1% to 4,821in 2009, from 6,190 in 2008.

According to the report, European Union countries were the main suppliers of motor vehicles to Cyprus in 2009 as EU accounted for 57.2% of total vehicle registrations, while Japan/s share fell to 28.8%.
