Cyprus unemployment shows no signs of abating

The rise in unemployment in Cyprus showed no signs of abating in November, as the number of registered unemployed climbed by 73% compared with November 2008, having risen by 72.9% compared with the year earlier in October.
The absolute rise was by 8,819 persons to 20,892, from 12,073 in November 2008.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment total was 20,623.
The Statistical Service noted that the trend has been upwards in the past four months, having seemed to have stabilised during the period May to July.
The increase compared with November 2008 was concentrated in the sectors of construction (an increase of 2,087), retail and wholesale trade (1,404), hotels and restaurants (1,322), public administration (885), real estate and business activities (798), manufacturing (677), as well as newcomers in the labour market where an increase of 735 unemployed persons was recorded.
