Cyprus retail trade falls prov 6.6% y/y in September

According to provisional estimates, the turnover volume index of retail trade (excluding automotive fuel) in Cyprus reached 117.7 in September, recording a decrease of 6.6% compared with September 2008 and 1.4% compared with August 2009.
This was a steeper fall than in August, when the index fell by 3.5% compared with August 2008 and 11.3% compared with the previous month.
For the period January-August 2009 the index recorded a decrease of 2.5% compared to the corresponding period of 2008, while according to provisional data for September, the index fell by 3.0% in the first nine months of the year.
The main fall has been concentrated in durables such as furniture, electrical goods and computers.
Meanwhile, according to the latest figures on value, the value index in August rose by 5.6% compared with August 2008 and by a provisional 8.7% in September.
For the period January-September 2009 the value index is provisionally estimated to have decreased by 2.3% compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
