Students from the English School excelled in the European Youth Parliament (EYP) National Session for the second consecutive year and will represent Cyprus in the International Session which will be held in Oslo next spring.
The state-sponsored school in Nicosia was selected from among 14 schools in Cyprus which took part in this year’s National Session.
The seven-member team (Mimi Kyprianou – Υear 6, Maria Nectaria Antoniou – Year 5, Christine Shahbenderian – Year 6, Chloe Orphanides Year 6, Nuriye Bey – Year 6, Marilia Paraschou – Year 6, Antonis Stylianou – Year 6) was selected following a rigorous process and have proved to be extremely gifted in a variety of skills including debate and presentation, a school announcement said.
About 30 students attended a workshop last April on EU institutions and policies organised in cooperation with the EU Representation in Cyprus. Following interviews and a written test, seven of them were selected to represent the school.
The team was prepared by Katia Solomidou, while the teachers were involved in teambuilding activities with other staff from the participating schools including a workshop on the topic of changes to the national curriculum in order to combat racism and xenophobia. The students addressed such topics as EU policy on swine flu, religion in the national curriculum, sex education, the current economic crisis and solar energy.
