Unemployment at 5,2% of the labour force in Q2 2009 in Cyprus

Unemployment rate stood at 5,2% of the labour force in Cyprus during the 2nd quarter of 2009 (males 4,9% and females 5,5%) while in the corresponding quarter of 2008 the rate was lower, at 3,1% (males 2,6% and females 3,9%), according to the results of the Labour Force Survey, issued by the Statistical Service.

The survey was carried out in accordance with a European Union Regulation, for the 2nd quarter of 2009, and according to its results the number of employed persons amounted to 382,9 thousand (males 211,4 thousand and females 171,5 thousand) and the number of unemployed persons to 20,9 thousand (males 11,0 thousand and females 9,9 thousand).

The employment rate for persons aged 15-64 was 70,2% (males 78,1% and females 62,7%) and remained at the same level as in the previous quarter, while it recorded a slide decrease from the corresponding quarter of 2008.

The unemployment rate for young persons aged 15-24 amounted to 13,0% of the labour force of the same age group, recording an increase from the previous quarter and the corresponding quarter of 2008.
