Cyprus is a country favorable for investments from Egyptian business people, President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has stressed, addressing in Cairo the Cyprus –Egypt Business Forum.

President Christofias, who is paying a three – day official visit to Egypt, reassured the Egyptian government officials who participated in the Forum, as well as the business people of Egypt that their country can rely on Cyprus, especially as regards the EU – Egypt relations.

“I want to assure you Excellencies, Ministers, business people, that yes you could rely on Cyprus, you can consider the Republic of Cyprus as an ambassador of Egypt within the framework of the united Europe”, he stressed.

He also said that for Cyprus, Egypt is a country, which bases its policy regarding Cyprus on the principles of international law and the UN Charter, adding that Cyprus as well bases its policy regarding the Palestinian issue and the Middle East problem in general on international law.

Cyprus and Egypt, he went on to add, are two countries “in mutual solidarity, who want peace to prevail in the Mediterranean and especially in our region”.

There is no other alternative, he noted, in reaching peace in the region, rather than peaceful means.

Both countries, he pointed out, are committed “to continue deepening their friendship and their cooperation in all fields, to continue deepening their exchanges, trade economic and tourism exchanges”.

The Cypriot President referred to the three bilateral agreements signed Tuesday in Cairo, as well as the “very important agreements” signed last year on research for oil and gas in the region, expressing certainty that the “two governments create a very stable fundament for you, the business people, to further promote your cooperation as friends, as business people”.

He furthermore described Cyprus as a country favorable for investments, just as Egypt is favorable for Cypriot investments as well.

“You have the full support of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt to promote very good relations, exchanges, investments and mutual efforts for economic trade and tourist development”, President Christofias added.

The Forum was attended among others by Minster of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides and Egyptian Ministers of Foreign Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid and Minister of Petroleum Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy.

“I want to assure you that the whole delegation feels at home, we are not strangers here because of the long standing friendship and mutual solidarity between our two countries, our governments and our people”, the Cypriot President concluded.

The Forum was co-organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Confederation of Egyptian European Business Associations.
