President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev confirmed the common pursuit with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias to actively work together on bilateral issues and in the international arena.

Medvedev was speaking after he had received the credentials of Cyprus’ new ambassador to Russia Petros Kestoras.

An official press release said here Friday that during the presentation of the credentials on January 16, President Medvedev referred to the relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus.

He underlined that traditions of friendship and cooperation link Russia and Cyprus, adding that the results of President Christofias’ recent visit to Moscow confirm the common pursuit to cooperate actively both on bilateral issues and in the international arena, including, of course, for the just settlement of the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN Security Council decisions and the agreement of all sides.

Cyprus President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, have been engaged in direct negotiations since early September last year, aiming at reaching a settlement of the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.
