The government intends to propose a change in existing legislation governing the electoral law to allow Cypriots, living abroad, to vote in the forthcoming European Parliament elections.

“By the end of January the Cabinet intends to table the proposed bill to allow Cypriot nationals, living abroad, to vote in the place of their residence,” Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis has said.

He noted that political parties appear to support this proposal and what remains to be done is to finalise the legal text of the proposal and send it to the Cabinet for approval, before it is presented to the House of Representatives.

“Work on the necessary amendments to the bill, carried out by the Law Office of the Republic, is already underway as we do not have much time before the June elections,” he said.

He also noted there must be sufficient time to enable the competent authorities of the Ministry of Interior to organise everything ahead of the elections, including prepare the electoral roll.

Elections for the European Parliament are scheduled between June 4-7. In Cyprus, represented at the Parliament with six deputies, elections are set to take place on June 7.
