President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has said that the government, without ruling out any consequences due to the global financial crisis, is following a ''calculated financial and social policy'' and will continue to do so to the benefit of the people.

“The question is whether Cyprus is in the eye of the cyclone of this global crisis,'' he noted.

The government, he added, “follows a calculated financial and social policy. We will continue it to the benefit of the people, and those in need will be the focus of the government.”

The President pointed out that there is no need to create panic among the people.

Replying to questions on educational reform, President Christofias said ''we will promote educational reform, which is a necessity for the country and our education,'' assuring that ''we will not distort the history of the country.''

He said history books will restore the truth, adding that ''we honour those who have fought'' for the freedom of this country.

President Christofias noted that ''the dialogue on educational reform will continue and I wish and hope that the society will contribute to this dialogue.''
