The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will meet on Wednesday, 22 October, in the UN protected area, the UN announced here Tuesday.

“Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia (UNPA) on Wednesday 22 October 2008, starting at 10 a.m.” a UN statement said.

Alexander Downer, UN Secretary General’s special adviser for Cyprus, had said after last week’s meeting that the leaders continued their discussions on the powers of the executive, the presidency and the vice-presidency in the framework of direct negotiations aiming to solve the Cyprus question.

Representatives of the two leaders and experts met on Thursday under UN auspices where they continued the discussion.

President Christofias and Talat began talks in early September with a view to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
