Health Minister Christos Patsalides announced that a new hospital specializing on radiation therapy and oncology will be set up in Limassol as well as a Transplant Centre will open at the Nicosia General Hospital.
Patsalides said that the Oncology centre or Cancer hospital will be constructed in Limassol following a cabinet decision. He said all paper work for the construction of the centre is ready and the government is ready to announce tenders for “this great project which is a must in Cyprus”.
Once the tenders are received then construction will immediately commence.
The Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre is so far the only hospital in Cyprus specializing in the treatment of cancer. It has a close cooperation with state hospitals, private clinics and doctors as well as associations who are supporting cancer patients.
Regarding the opening of a Transplant Centre at the Nicosia General Hospital, Patsalides said that an ad hoc committee is working on the idea, trying to find ways for such centre to operate not only for kidney transplant operations.
He said the aim is for the government to contribute to this important sector.
The Paraskevaidion Transplant Centre is the only transplant centre on the island.
