Cyta Hellas, the Greek subsidiary of the state-owned telco, is about to conclude its broadband network expansion plans in October, by raising the fibre-optic cable from 700km in July to 1,100 by the end of next month.
The company has taken advantage of the Greek government’s policy to promote broadband telecom services in the regions with its total investments reaching about EUR mln.
“We are already active in Greece with our own network of 700km in 13 municipalities in the northern regions of the country covering a population area of 1 mln, but we want to expand more and add new services, with the first due from October,” CYTA Chairman Stavros Kremmos said during the presentation of the 2007 annual report.
He told the Financial Mirror that while CYTA’s foray into the UK and Hungary had not yielded the best results, Cyprus’ leading telecom group was determined to push ahead with its overseas expansion plans.
Loukia Pavlidou, Coordinator of the Subsidiary and Strategic Services Dept., wrote in the telco’s monthly newsletter Odos Tilepikoinonion that July saw the completion of the new fibre-optic cable in the northern Makedonia region covering the towns of Florina, Ptolemaida, Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria, Veroia and Naoussa, that accounts for 50% of the Cyta Hellas investment.
At the same time, the company is completing the laying of a parallel fibre-optic cable in the towns of Heraklion, Ayios Nikolaos and Ierapetra in Crete, raising the total network length to 1,100 km that should be ready for operation in October.
The implementation of a commercial services and broadband product sales programme should reach its peak in September with a pilot project already underway in select neighbourhoods in Heraklion.
