The Russian Federation has welcomed the outcome of the meeting held last Friday between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, noting that “a new and real step towards the right direction has been achieved”.

In a written statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry notes the launching of direct negotiations between President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on September 3rd for a Cyprus solution.

“A new and real step towards the right direction has been achieved. The outcome of the meeting shows the political will and the constructive spirit of both leaders”, it adds.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expects that this development will lead to a political settlement based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, decided last Friday to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3rd, with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem.
