“The European Commission has signed a 1.1 million euro contract with a consortium, led by the German company IGIP mbH, to prepare surveys, detailed designs and tender documents for the construction and rehabilitation of several waste management facilities in the northern part of Cyprus,” a Commission press release, issued here today, said.

The project which will last 12 months concerns the construction and rehabilitation of central sanitary landfill, transfer station, dumping sites, pre-conditioning site(s) for construction and demolition waste, medical waste treatment facility and hazardous waste treatment/storage facility.

The end goal of this contract, the press release said, is to improve solid waste management in the Turkish Cypriot community in compliance with the requirements of the acquis communautaire through detailed investigations, preparation of the engineering designs and tender documents for the installation of state-of the art solid waste management SWM facilities responding to the short and medium-term needs of the Turkish Cypriot community and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure in compliance European standards.

The project start-up meeting will be held on 25 July in the morning, in the European Union Programme Support Office, in Nicosia in the presence of European Commission officials, the consortium led by IGIP mbH and representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The project is funded under the 259 million euro EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, managed by the European Commission.
