The European Commission has approved, following a recommendation by Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, the allocation of 185,000 euro to Cyprus to cover part of the cost for the eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease in Cyprus.

A Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak occurred in Cyprus in 2007 and the Commission decided, with the consent of the EU Committee on Food Chain and Animal Health, to allocate a financial aid to Cyprus for its expenses during 2007, as part of measures to fight FMD.

The contribution covers 60% of expenses which are eligible for EU funding. The amount of 185,000 euro is the first installment of the whole amount.
