The Nicosia Chamber of Commerce has declared that it supports all efforts by President Demetris Christofias to help towards opening the checkpoint at the end of

Ledra Street

to the public, as well as the one at Limnitis.

The two crossing points are the main subjects of discussion expected to take place today between presidential commissioner George Iacovou and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart that will pave the way for the summit meeting between Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat, possibly next week.

“We are convinced that the opening of the crossings, under certain security regards, will bring positive changes to the only divided capital of Europe as everyone’s aim is to bring down all obstacles that partition Nicosia,” the Chamber said in an announcement.

“The crossing (at Ledra Street) can take place immediately, as the support work of the listed buildings in the area can get underway later without stopping the crossing of pedestrians.”

“This will undoubtedly reinvigorate the historical and commercial centre of the old town, it will be boost to the market and increase tourism in the area within the walls,” the Chamber concluded.
