Goods worth more than 700.000 euro crossed the ”Green Line” in January 2008.
According to a press release issued by the European Commission, this is the highest level recorded since the Green Line Regulation came into force when Cyprus joined the EU in May 2004.
The main component was Turkish Cypriot potatoes, worth about 350,000 euro. Previously, the highest monthly figure was about 500,000 euro in November last year.
Andrew Rasbash, Head of the Taskforce for the Turkish Cypriot Community in the European Commission, said: ”Green Line trade has increased steadily in volume and value since trade started in 2004. I hope that this promising increase in trade across the Green Line will continue, to the benefit of both communities. I welcome especially the rapidly growing trade in potatoes.”
The ”Green Line Regulation”, adopted in 2004, has provided a clear EU framework for the crossing of goods and persons across the ”Green Line” since the accession of Cyprus to the EU.
The European Commission is about to propose to the Council technical amendments to this Regulation in order to further enhance trade across the ”Green Line”.
According to the press release, data on trade are supplied to the Commission by Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce.
