Cyprus environmental expenditure fell in 2006

Industrial expenditure on environmental expenditure in Cyprus fell in 2006 according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service, Cystat.

Total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2006 is estimated at CYP 17.3 mln, which corresponded to 0.21% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to CYP 17.9 mln or 0.23% in 2005.

By sector of economic activity, the manufacturing industries reported expenditure of CYP 14.7 mln, the mining and quarrying industries CYP 1.3 mln and the electricity and water enterprises CYP 1.3 mln.

In the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of food products and beverages accounts for CYP 5.4 mln, manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products for CYP 5.2 mln and manufacturing of wood and products of wood (except furniture) for CYP 1.2 mln.

By environmental domain, expenditure related to the following: the reduction of air emissions CYP 6.0 mln; the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste CYP 4.8 mln; the treatment of waste water CYP 3.3 mln; the protection of soil and ground water and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity CYP 3.1 mln; and the abatement of noise and vibrations CYP 0.1 mln.
