Trichet, Barroso to join Cyprus celebrations for adoption of euro

Various celebrations will take place on Friday, January 17, to mark the adoption of the euro in Cyprus. At 5.30 p.m. there will be a special event “Welcoming Cyprus to the euro area”, at the Central Bank auditorium in Nicosia where Jean-Claude Trichet, the President of the European Central Bank, will present the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, Athanasios Orphanides, the fifteenth “Euro Star”, a memento that is offered to each new member of the Eurosystem.

Later in the eveing, at 7p.m., President Tassos Papadopoulos and the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso will make statements at the Presidential Palace.

From there they will move on at 7.30 p.m. to a celebratory concert “Prosanatolismoi” at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.

The international delegation include the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Ministers from Slovenia, Greece and other EU member states, European Commissioners Marcos Kyprianou and Joaquin Almunia, as well as other Commission officials, Euro MPs, ECB officials and others.
