Cyprus waste one of highest in EU

The Statistical Service Cystat estimates that the total amount of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2006 stands at 571,000 tonnes compared with 553,000 tonnes in 2005, showing an increase of 3.2%.
From the total amount generated in 2006, 87.4% was delivered to landfills and the remaining 12.6% is estimated as having been collected for recycling.
The per capita generation of municipal solid waste in Cyprus during 2006 reached 741 kg and is one of the highest in the European Union, where an amount of 517 kg of waste is generated on average per inhabitant.
At similarly high levels as Cyprus are Ireland (815 kg), Denmark (737 kg) and Luxembourg (702 kg).
