Presidential elections: New voters have until January 2 to register

The Cyprus Interior Ministry’s election department has called on all persons from the age of 18 and above to apply in due time to be included in the electoral roll to be eligible to vote in February’s presidential elections.
According to a press release issued by the department, new voters have until January 2 to register in the electoral roll.
Voting is compulsory by law but so far nobody has been prosecuted for failing to turn up to vote.
Some 515.000 Cypriots are expected to cast their vote on February 17 to elect the new President, for a five-year term. At present, there are four presidential candidates, incumbent President Tassos Papadopoulos, House President and General Secretary of AKEL party Demetris Christofias and former foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides, backed by the Democratic Rally party and Costas Themistocleous, former Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
