EU aid for Turkish Cypriot community

The European Commission has signed a EUR889.000 contract with the German company Plejades to carry out a “Feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the former Cyprus Mining Corporation (CMC) mining area”.

The project will last 18 months. Plejades will, carry out a detailed soil sampling and analysis plan, assess the level of soil and ground pollution of the site, determine the conditions for the complete rehabilitation of the area and prepare tender documents for the necessary reclamation works.

The end goal of the project is to facilitate the process of decontamination of one of the major environment hotspots in Cyprus.The project will be presented to the press and the public on Friday 30 November 2007 at 11.00 in Lefke by European Commission officials, the company Plejades and representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community.The project is funded under the EUR259 mln EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, managed by the European Commission.
