The number of registered unemployed continues to fall sharply, with the number of unemployed people registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of September 2007 reaching 9,894 persons in September 2007, compared with 11,783 persons in August 2007.

There was therefore a decrease of 1,889.

The Statistical Service said that the fall between the two months was mainly recorded in the sector of education “and it is attributed to the recruitment of teaching and auxiliary staff in educational institutions”.

Compared with September 2006, a decrease of 1,198 was recorded. This was mainly observed in the sectors of manufacturing, transport and construction.

The Statistical Service no longer produces an unemployment rate for the registered unemployed. Instead, it quotes the unemployment rate based on the quarterly Labour Force Survey, which showed an unemployment rate of 3.4% in the second quarter.
