The Statistical Service has announced that it has published the annual report “Industrial Statistics 2006”, which provides detailed statistical data on developments in the broad industrial sector covering manufacturing, mining and quarrying and electricity and water.

The major developments within each sector during 2006 were as follows.

Mining and Quarrying

The mining and quarrying sector in 2006 increased by 4.3% at current market prices compared to the previous year. It is estimated that the value added of the sector increased from CYP 26,6 mln in 2005 to CYP 27,7 mln in 2006.

Manufacturing

The value added of the manufacturing sector at current market prices reached CYP 673.8 mln in 2006 compared to CYP 698.3 mln in 2005, registering a decrease of 3.5%. This is mainly attributed to the recession in the tobacco industry.

Food, beverages and tobacco industries, which traditionally constitute the largest group, in 2006 contributed 33.6% to the manufacturing value added compared to 39.4% in 2005, reflecting the recession in the tobacco industry.

The value added of this group was CYP 226.2 mln compared to CYP 275.1 mln in 2005 at current market prices.

The group of the other non-metallic mineral products increased its contribution to the value added of the manufacturing sector to CYP 106.5 mln compared to CYP 100.7 mln in 2005 at current market prices.

This assisted the group to remain the second largest in the manufacturing sector.

The price index of domestically produced manufactured goods recorded an increase of 3.0% over 2005, compared to a rise of 4.2% in the previous year. This is attributed to an increase of 2.7% in local market prices and 4.9% in export prices.

Industrial exports increased from CYP 180.1 mln in 2005 to CYP 199.8 mln in 2005. Exports to European Union countries amounted to 50.0% of the total while the share absorbed by Middle Eastern countries, was reduced to 14.7% in 2006.

Expenditure on fixed assets in the sector during 2006 increased to CYP 96.7 mln compared to CYP 95.4 mln in 2005. Machinery and equipment accounted for 56.4% of the total investment, new buildings and works for 30.1% and transport equipment for the remaining 13.5%.

Employment in the manufacturing sector remained stable at 37,000 people. The percentage share of unemployment in the sector to the total unemployment in the economy is estimated at 9.0%, with average unemployment reaching 1,526 persons in 2006 compared to 2,153 in 2005.

In the manufacturing sector, the largest increases in the consumption of electricity were recorded in the publishing and printing activities, in chemicals and chemical products and metal products industries. Decreases were observed in the clothing industries. Consumption of electricity by households increased by 4.7%, for water pumping purposes by 6.7% and for public lighting by 4.5%.

Consumption of water in towns is provisionally estimated to have increased by 1.3% to 31.7 mln tonnes, compared to 31.3 mln tonnes in 2005.
