The Central Bank of Cyprus in coordination with the Ministry of Finance will launch an electronic trading platform (MTS) for the conduct of auctions in the primary market and the trading of government bonds and bills in the secondary market.

According to the Central Bank’s announcement, the new market for government bonds and T-Bills will be called “MTS Cyprus” and it will be part of the “EuroMTS” platform, which is the major and most established trading platform for government bonds in Europe. It is noted that the government bonds will continue to trade on the CSE.

The above development is a step towards the implementation and establishment of a modernised and widely used platform for the trading of bonds and T-Bills in Cyprus. This aim to enhance the attractiveness, the tradability and liquidity of government stock which would essentially lead to the reduction in the Republic’s cost of debt.
