Three Indian naval ships are visiting Larnaca Port from 15 to 20 September 2007. All ships form part of the 1wt Training Squadron Based at Kochi, India, under the aegis of the Indian Navy’s Southern Naval Command.

According to a press release issued by the High Commission of India, the INS Tarangini, the Indian Navy’s sole sail training ship, will be visiting Larnaca from 16 to 20 September 2007 and it will be open for visitors from 17 to 19 September 2007.

The name of the INS TARANGINI derives from the Hindi word ”Tarang” meaning waves. It is the first commissioned ship in the Indian Navy to have circumnavigated the globe from 23 January 2003 to 25 April 2004.

The INS TARANGINI is currently on its way back to India after successful participation in the ”Tall Ships Challenge Series 2007”, organised by the American Sail Training Association on the Atlantic coast of North America.

The INS SHARDUL is a landing ship tank. It is an auxiliary warship capable of transporting various kinds of combat equipment. ”SHARDUL” is named after an animal meaning ”tiger”. INS SHARDUL is currently on deployment for administrative support to the INS TARANGINI, which is on its return passage.

The INS SUJATA, an offshore petrol vessel (OPV), was commissioned in the Indian Navy in November 1993. It is also on deployment for administrative support to the INS TARANGINI on its return passage.
