Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat will meet on September 5, the UN announced here Tuesday.
The meeting, the first to be held since President Papadopoulos and Talat met on 8 July 2006 when a UN-brokered agreement was reached between the two leaders, was decided after a meeting on Tuesday between the senior aides to the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot community.
”The two leaders will meet in the afternoon of September 5 at the (U.N.) special representative’s official residence,” U.N. spokesman on the island Brian Kelly said.
Director of Papadopoulos’ Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis and Talat’s adviser Rashit Pertev met at the UN headquarters in Nicosia, in the presence of UNFICYP senior adviser Wlodzimierz Cibor. President Papadopoulos, in a letter inviting Talat to a meeting, also proposed practical steps to implement the July 8 Agreement.
