Production of meat, poultry and dairy

According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the number of animals slaughtered in May recorded an increase for almost all kinds of animals except sheep and goats when compared with the previous month.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of slaughters of cattle was down 9.1%; of pigs was up 9.2%; of sheep was up 26%; of goats was up 9.81%, and of poultry was up 35.8%.

The production of cow’s milk in June decreased to 11,450 tonnes from 12,400 tonnes in the previous month. Compared to the same month of the previous year it increased by 1.69%.

Milk products produced in December reached 6,860 tonnes of drinking milk, 380 tonnes of cream, 440 tonnes of acidified milk, 50 tonnes of butter and 220 tonnes of cheese.

The number of eggs for hatching placed in incubation in June reached 124,050 eggs for laying and 1,520,080 eggs for meat.

Both eggs for laying and eggs for meat recorded a decrease compared to the previous month.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the eggs placed in incubation for laying recorded a decrease of 26.4%, and also the eggs for meat recorded a decrease of 20%.

The chicks used for laying increased to 65,070 compared to 63,000 in May, whereas the chicks used for meat decreased to 1,304,200 from 1,343,840 in the previous month.

Compared to the corresponding month of 2006, chicks used for laying recorded an increase of 67.1%, whereas the chicks used for meat recorded a decrease of 9.1 %.
