A 38-year old Spanish man, member of the crew on board the Spanish fishing vessel ”Jose Rafaella”, died today of heatstroke, Minister of Health Costas Kadis told CNA.

The vessel, which was under quarantine, is no longer subject to restrictions.

In the early hours today, Limassol Port and Marine Police received a message that a man was found unconscious on the Spanish vessel, anchored in the New Port of Limassol. He was transferred to Limassol General Hospital where he was declared dead.

In statements to CNA, the Minister said that the post mortem showed that he had died of heatstroke.

Meanwhile, a second man on board the same vessel, a 53-year old Spaniard was transferred yesterday on board a Police helicopter to the Intensive Care Unit of Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors are trying to determine the cause of his symptoms.

“The first indications or the first results of the medical examinations have excluded the possibility of any infection or virus,” the Minister said referring to the 53 year old man.

Ministry of Health officials have not detected any problems with the vessel, Kadis told CNA.

Doctors at Larnaca Hospital have told reporters that the symptoms of the 53-year old Spanish man include diarrhea, high fever, breathing problems and spasms.

“We have not clarified the cause of his symptoms yet. We are still examining the situation”, he explained.
